4 turkeys, 34 guests, 17 nationalities

Despite our location on the opposite side of the world, Thanksgiving was still celebrated yesterday here in Umeå. This year, I had two fellow midwesterners to share our tradition with: Matthew, a fellow student in the Interaction Design program, and his friend Karl, from back home.

We decided Tuesday afternoon to make dinner for both of our classes and that we would do the grocery shopping the next day. I sat down and made a list of our classmates and those who would be bringing their girlfriends or wives along with them--in all, we were shopping for 28 people. My one year of experience in preparations from last year was all we had to go on.

It was a full spread and a full house. The dinner was held in Matt's corridor (all 10 of his corridor mates were also invited). We baked four turkeys weighing in at a total of 35 lbs, eight casseroles of stuffing, green beans, and cheesy carrots, 5 kilos of potatoes and four large yams. There was orange-lingonberry sauce with local berries picked last fall, homemade gravy and freshly harvested pumpkin for a homemade pie. It took two kitchens and four ovens to prepare the food, all of which I must say turned out really well, not even taking our inexperience into consideration.

Our guests came from all around the world: Brazil, Mexico, India, China, Malaysia, France, Germany, Canada, Finland, Mexico, Thailand, Peru, Denmark, Italy, Russia, Sweden and the US. It was a great holiday to share with so many friends from all over and a lot of fun preparing.

Happy Turkey Day! :D
